G&L Legacy Special Sonic Blue 2016

G&L Legacy Special, sonic blue, made in USA 2016. G&L was started by Leo Fender and longtime collaborator George Fullerton in 1980, offering the world Leo's final updates on some of his most iconic designs. This example was made in Fullerton, California as a custom order, so it's got the original build sheet included. The Legacy Special takes the iconic Strat shape, upgrades the tuners, adds a super reliable high mass tremolo bridge, swaps in some killer rails style pickups and changes the controls for more variation and utility. The execution is excellent: this is made with a lot of care, and feels much more convincing in the hands than most USA Fender offerings in my opinion. The neck is comfy and quick, with a gorgeous dark slab of rosewood on the board, tightly grained arrow straight maple on the back and some bend-friendly tall frets finish it all off. The bridge is very stable and can handle some enthusiastic bends without losing tune; it's a great piece of hardware. The pickups sound more like a vintage single coil than a humbucker, but being a rails-style with two coils, they don't hum at all. The controls are intuitive: volume, treble, bass. Being able to wind in a bit of extra bass on the bridge pickup or brighten up that neck pickup is super handy. The tone is in the vintage-Strat genre, but with some added articulation and a very assured, fast low end thump. The mids and highs are very smooth and airy while still delivering plenty of complexity and nuance; it sounds terrific. The sonic blue and mint green guard make for a slick pool-party aesthetic too, it's very summery. These don't come up used very often in these parts, so if you've been waiting for your chance, here we are.

Cosmetic condition notes: minor finish wear. The headstock has scuffs on the end. The neck is clean and smooth in the hands, minor dimples and some rub wear on the back only. The back has minor scuffs on the  top horn and elbow area. The sides have no major marks. The front has scuffs near the jack and in the elbow area and some play wear on the guard and horns.
Overall: excellent condition (9/10)

Playing condition notes: Action is low, neck is straight, intonation is good, truss rod works. All electronics tested and working properly. Wearing fresh 10/46 Moonshiners strings.
Fret life: 9/10, minor wear only
