Little Crow Phoenix, black burst finish, made in Australia around 2022. Little Crow is the project of longtime woodwork enthusiasts Dave and Viv Street, based out of Perth WA. The pair ran a specialist furniture making business for thirty years before turning their attention to guitars, with a taste for simple instruments that favour swampy tones over frills and utilise top notch local hardwoods. The Phoenix is a bit of a reverse, offset style body, cut from a thick slab of mountain ash and paired with a classy bolt on neck. Mountain ash is a eucalyptus species and grows to be the tallest flowering plant on the planet: some of the Tassie examples are pushing 100m tall. The hand oiled burst finish is classy: it leaves some texture in the grain of the wood on show to both eyes and hands without feeling rough or underbaked, offering a certain understated ..
charm. The neck is a slim C style shape which will feel familiar to Fender fans; it's easy to get along with. Plug it in, and the blues is on: this is a snarly, swampy, growly little creature. The neck pickup is warm and round, great with the tone rolled off a bit for those warbling leads and introspective chords. The bridge pickup is snappy and abrupt, with an upfront bite balanced by a disarming warmth through the mids and lows. This is a really fun little guitar, and it's very fun to pick up a locally made instrument made from gorgeous local timber for this kind of dollarydoos.
