Gretsch 6120 Western, bright orange, made in Japan 1990. If you like your guitars subtle and apologetic, this one is not for you. The 6120 launched in 1955 bearing the name of country superstar Chet Atkins. This example was born in the 'revival era' for Gretsch: a couple of years after Fred Gretsch Jr purchased the company back from Baldwin and kickstarted production out of Japan. It's beautifully made: the Terada factory really does beautiful work, and this has been built and finished with exemplary care and skill. The sound on offer is bright and assertive, with a bold and expansive treble, snarly mids with plenty of snap and sizzle and a generous fat bass. It will cover country, rockabilly and blues stuff with gusto, but is surprisingly smooth and agreeable for jazz or singer-songwriter stuff. The neck is slim and quick, and the body feels very lively in the hands; it's a lot of fun to play. The rude orange finish, giant G decal, gold hardware, flamed headstock, snazzy gold guard and cowboy themed inlays make for a wild look, it's unreasonably cool. These Western style variants are a lot trickier to find than the regular models, but dang, worth it. Chetyeah!
